Importing Transactions

Budgetwise lets you import transactions from your bank and credit card statements using CSV files.

Supported Formats

Most banks let you download transactions as CSV files. Budgetwise supports standard CSV formats with columns for date, payee, and amount.

How to Import

  1. Go to the Account you want to import into
  2. Click Import
  3. Select your CSV file
  4. Map the columns (date, payee, amount) to match your file
  5. Review the transactions
  6. Click Import

Duplicate Detection

Budgetwise automatically detects duplicate transactions during import. If a transaction with the same date, payee, and amount already exists, it will be flagged so you can skip it.

Tip: Import regularly — weekly or after each statement. Smaller imports are easier to review and categorize.

After Importing

Imported transactions arrive uncategorized. You’ll need to:

  1. Assign each transaction to a category
  2. Mark transactions as cleared if they’ve posted to your bank
  3. Verify the amounts match your statement

Tips

  • Download the right date range — Overlap a few days with your last import to catch any stragglers. Duplicate detection will handle the rest.
  • Check your bank’s export options — Some banks offer different formats. CSV is the most reliable.
  • Review before importing — The preview step shows exactly what will be imported. Take a moment to scan for anything unexpected.
