Accounts

Accounts represent where your money lives — checking, savings, credit cards, and cash.

Account Types

Budgetwise supports four account types:

Checking

Your primary spending account. Most day-to-day transactions happen here.

Savings

Money set aside for specific purposes. Savings accounts are tracked separately so you always know what’s available to spend versus what’s saved.

Credit Card

Credit cards work differently in Budgetwise. When you charge something, the money is committed from your budget immediately — not when you pay the bill. This keeps your budget honest.

Cash

Track physical cash on hand. Useful if you use cash for certain categories like groceries or entertainment.

Adding an Account

  1. Go to Accounts in the sidebar
  2. Click Add Account
  3. Choose the account type
  4. Enter a name (e.g., “Chase Checking”)
  5. Enter the current balance

Tip: Use the actual balance from your bank statement, not what you think it is. Accuracy matters more than speed.

Account Balances

Each account shows two numbers:

  • Cleared balance — Transactions that have posted to your bank
  • Uncleared balance — Pending transactions that haven’t posted yet

The working balance is the sum of both.

Closing an Account

If you close a bank account or pay off a credit card, you can close the account in Budgetwise. Closed accounts are hidden from the sidebar but their transaction history is preserved.
